Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify attributes of clinical nurses' critical reflection.

Methods: Focus group interviews were conducted from April 20th to July 30th, 2021. Ten participants of a critical reflection program who had experience of teaching new nurses with more than 5 years of clinical experience in a tertiary general hospital were enrolled in this study. Data were analyzed with the inductive content analysis method of Elo and Kyngas (2008).

Results: The following four themes were derived: ¡°Identifying the contextual meaning of nursing situation¡±, ¡°Applying what has been learned to practice by reconstructing experiences¡±, ¡°Discovering the meaning of nursing while learning from experience¡±, and ¡°Reinforcing of inner resources through an open exchange of ideas¡±. These results showed attributes of clinical nurses with good critical reflection.

Conclusion: A critical reflection program based on reflective experience is needed to continuously improve nursing competency of clinical nurses.
